THE SILENT POISON.
"July’s rain
pouring heavily on Feronmi’s
Thatch hut
Soaking the red walls
Feronmi sat just by her firewood
As she cooked dinner
Adding his favorite spice
And something extra.
A mixture of pain, betrayal, and whatever it was
Glistened in her round eye balls
As Jubril walked into the house.
Smelling of rain and another woman.
She took his bag from him.
With a coy, deceitful smile
I could tell!
Made him seat comfortably on his favourite chair
She stroked his back with her delicate fingers
And watched him swallow lumps
after lumps
Savouring the finger-licking Melon soup
After which, he lay down to sleep.
Never to wake up again.
Feronmi wasn’t a fighter.
She was a silent poison.
So sweet that it kills you before
You realize it.
And she had given Jubril
A savory taste of his own medicine."
MOREMI.
"If Moremi hadn’t danced,
Hadn’t danced to Chief Atunu’s loud, hungry drums.
If she hadn’t just closed her eyes and ran
into his sickle cell home
Immersed in chaos and aggression
Of three tribally marked women
Thick and heavy
Like a bamboo stick
Moremi Kija
Sold for shelter and a longer throat
Chief Atunu had paid all the bills.
And put food on their table.
He deserved his reward.
Don’t you think?
And Moremi was promised to him.
Before she kissed Mother Earth.
She wished she had ran
as fast as her legs could carry her.
But then,
Her legs had a mind of their own.
She wished she had Eloped with Somto, her Ibo lover.
But the smell of fresh mint notes and expensive Perfume clouded her nostrils.
Even a toddler could smell the war.
She was in for
The drums of death quietly faded away.
as she was being released
from the firm grip
Of Labake, her senior wife
Who held her down and stuffed freshly pounded atarodo into her nostrils.
The same nostrils that had been beclouded by the smell of fresh "Owo"
And what was her offense?
It was her turn to warm the chief's bed.
Chuckles.
There was indeed more to come."
WITH US.
"We bemoan, we curse
And we become exactly what we detest.
We are not at fault.
Our pain, pleasure, and humanity
Sometimes Mold and produce
A puffy and defiant monster
That is after its own belly.
We make ourselves ,ourselves.
One hurt from Collins
One betrayal from Cecilia
And we become the pain they dished out.
Hot and spicy on enamel plates
We discard the values we once held.
Shoving them into the trash
We can’t help it.
But we can take responsibility.
But then Kosi and Emeka
Are willing to show us the love.
And everything in between.
Very questionable, we think.
But then, we can’t help it.
Having swallowed too much bile
We don’t care for candy.
And Although we can’t help it
We can remedy it.".
THE SCORPION.
"Words after words
slowly turning into sentences
The mouth's greatest weapon
Slowly becoming bitter
As one is possessed with a subtle yet
Powerful spirit
With a creeping force, one is compelled to do the worst.
And before you bat an eyelid,
You are back.
As sane as ever.
With a pang of sharp regret thugging at your chest.
Letting you know that you have been stung by the scorpion -RAGE
You had its poison in you.
And you were done for
It might kill you.
On a lucky day, you might survive.
It’s sting."
DEEP MUSINGS.
"Silently,quietly painting 10 years on a Canvas
Reflecting on what really matters
Envisioning life through the eyes of the tiny showers
I could call it madness, but it isn’t.
Perhaps it is.
but a different kind.
Flipping pages is worth a million dollars.
Buried in the truths of time and chance
I’m sure to make a difference."
