Life itself presents us with a lot of unexpected things.
The days we put on a t-shirt and shorts with an old Dunlop slippers might be the day of our miracle.
We never can tell what the next minute of our life's hold. Anticipate!
..............................................................
For every thing there is a story behind it no matter how infinitesimal it may be. And I would like to share mine with you on how I started writing or how I discovered per say that I had the gift of writing. Talents some times take too long a process to discover for some persons and it can also be discovered within a short period of time.
It was the break of dawn on a fateful day. I said my prayers, had my bath and got dressed after which I had breakfast. Just like every other normal day I expected nothing new or different.I had just concluded my primary school education and I was waiting to be admitted into in junior school one where I would face bigger challenges and experience bigger things. Junior school one was the beginning of my life in secondary school and I was really anticipating the day I would be admitted, purchase my uniforms and the day I would resume. At that time, my immediate elder brother was attending lessons in preparation for his upcoming BECE examinations and my eldest brother was in Senior school two and was also preparing for his GCE examinations so I was the only one left at home. My mother thought it wise to take me to my aunt's house who had just put to bed not too long before to baby sit the child so I jumped into the car and she rode me there, on getting there I alighted from the car and entered into the house, my cousins were getting ready for school. I greeted my aunt and she spoke of how much I had grown, she went on to ask what class I was moving to after which she exclaimed. I greeted my cousin's and took the baby from my aunt's arms and carried him while playing with his very fleshy cheeks, he was such a cute boy. I sat on a chair inside the house as I rocked the baby back and forth and not too long after I had sat down the bus that normally comes to pick my cousin's honked and they all bade me goodbye as they ran to the gate. It was just me, my aunt, the baby and my little cousin who was still too small to start going to school. I went to the baby's room with my little cousin and the baby on my arms. I lay down on one end of the bed and placed the baby beside me while my little cousin lay on the other end. I asked her little questions which she could barely answer and this made me smile in amusement. Later on my little cousin left the room and went to meet her mother so I was left with the baby and sooner than later he dozed off. I stared at the ceiling as the feeling of boredom enveloped me.
And then the whole icing on the cake. As I rolled from side to side, my aunt came into the room and handed me few novels to keep me busy. I jumped up in excitement because I loved reading novels so much. I love how ojo and bola were at the top of their classes, I loved to read the different shades of the cunny tortoise and most importantly I loved the glossary and moral lessons. So, I looked at the 'about the book' of each novel and choose the one I'd read first. I read until my cousins returned from school and I went out to welcome them after which I waited for them to have their baths and we settled for a meal of Noodles and fried eggs. My aunt told me she was going to the market to stock the house and she was going to be back soon. I nooded my head and went on to play with my cousins and sadly my mom came to pick me up almost immediately.
I had so many thoughts running through my mind . Should I take the novels back home and return them when I am done? My aunt might not allow me take the books and she wasn't even around. I could take them and say i forgot to return them. Then, I proceeded to ask my cousins if I could take it with me home and they said yes. So, I took the books with me and when I got home, I ate and settled down before reading a particular book that was about a young girl who worked as a maid in a particular family and how she was maltreated and when I was done with this book, my aunt suddenly called my mom requesting for the books. And my mom apologized and promised to return them the next day whilst looking at me dangerously. When my mom got off the phone she started scolding me and asking why I took the books without asking and I protested with the point that I asked my cousins and she went on to say and I remember 'That's how stealing starts". And I felt really bad, I packed all the novels and gave them to my mother.
Then, something happened. I found out that the novel about the girl that was maltreated kept replaying in my head. I guess it was her pain, the inhuman treatment that drew me in and I felt this strong compulsion to write a story like that and that was how the first novel I wrote came about which is named 'The Cry of Emily' . From that day henceforth I started writing. It was really magical how I started putting words together and how much I loved it, i could spend the whole day with a book and pen without bathing or even eating.
It might not seem too real but this is exactly what happened and how I started writing.
I might still have discovered later in my life but discovering at the age of nine was a blessing and still remains a blessing.
*THE END*.
