A weekly narrative poetry.
IKU kii ṣe bayi (DEATH NOT NOW).
"At 3am,
I am awake.
The streets are quiet and cold.
It’s almost as if technology somehow goes to sleep and awakens. 2 hours later
It feels like the world has died a cold death.
And human or animal voices can’t even be heard.
I stop to think.
What if I am no longer in this world?
Everywhere is pitch dark.
I try to smell something in the air.
Probably the freshness of the grass just
Outside my window
I try to pinch myself, but the fear rising
inside, had crippled my strength to move.
And I suddenly began to feel the emptiness of everything around me.
It felt like everything had disappeared and I was just all alone.
I couldn’t call out to anyone.
Because I felt my own voice echoing in silence, will fuel my fear.
And confirm my thoughts.
Had I died? And was placed in a certain room awaiting judgment from the king?
No, I didn’t want to die yet.
No! Not now!
Not even tomorrow.
I will miss the Shalaye and Gbas-Gbos.
Running along Lagos bridge by 2am
The hotness of Mama Bunmi’s Akara
And the night out's with my girls.
And then it hit me.
Was eating Gboaye’s money and licking
ice cream all I came to life for?
Even if I am dead.
Will that be all I did with my time?
Except for playing Suwe?
I hadn’t lived so well.
I hadn’t fixed the puzzle yet.
It wasn’t my time to say goodbye.
IKU kii ṣe bayi (Death not now)
I had to find life and fulfillment too.
I drifted off to my wonderland.
Until I felt a hot spank on my buttocks
It was Kike, one of the girls."
